From Chartered Accountant to Leader
I thought that after I completed my Chartered Accountant designation the world would be my oyster – I would always have a great career that kept me challenged doing interesting work while feeling indispensable to the companies into which I poured my blood, sweat and tears.
No such luck.
While I have lucked out in my career to work at great companies with great people who appreciated my skills and work ethic, I largely felt underutilized and working below my potential. Maybe in the end I didn’t like accounting? Maybe my vibrant personality didn’t make me an ideal CA? Maybe it’s typical to not love your job? I know I wasn’t the only one... Having always avoided mediocrity in my personal and professional life, this just didn’t sit well with me.
From Nova Scotia to Calgary…
After several years of different jobs, difficult decisions and changing directions while living in Nova Scotia, I moved my life to Calgary in the fall of 2014 – just as the economy was starting to shut down. While the move was a bit of a leap of faith, I also identified the larger market as an opportunity to possibly find a new career path and find a spark in my career that would ignite my potential. Despite the down turn in the market, I managed to find a contract position doing what was comfortable while I settled into my new life in Calgary.
When I found Higher Landing, I saw this as the opportunity to try to identify something within myself that would take me away from the career I had worked so hard to develop. I knew I could do more.
A decision to invest in myself.
After investing myself into their Career Transformation program, working with the team at Higher Landing, and doing a lot of soul searching, what I realized about myself was a bit surprising. I was happy with the career I was developing. I liked business – I liked managing and analyzing financial aspects of operations, but I needed to be doing it while having a stronger voice at the management table. I didn’t necessarily need to transform my career at all – I needed to transition and I needed help to land higher.
My own career advisory team!
Completing the process at Higher Landing helped me develop a better understanding of myself and what I need in my career to keep me engaged, happy and productive. The amazing team of career transformers, advisors and professionals helped me identify strengths I didn’t realize I had. They helped me sort through previous personal and career experiences to allow me to recognize what is most important – what I can’t live without and what I need to leave in the past going forward in my career. Most of all, the team at Higher Landing helped to bolster my confidence in myself and what value I can offer future employers.
With the experiences I gained going through my career transition program, I was able to re-brand myself, hone in on how I present myself in the market, improve my interviewing techniques, and gain a better understanding of “me” and what I was looking for. All of these skills were utilized recently when I was able to secure a permanent position in a new-to-me industry which encompasses many of the aspects I had identified I needed throughout the Higher Landing process.
Feel stuck in a mediocre career?
I would encourage anyone who has been stuck in the mediocrity of their careers, who has been displaced from their job, or who is looking to transform their career to contact Higher Landing and let them help you explore your full potential. You may just surprise yourself.
In this economy, with my limited experience in the Calgary market, I came away from the process with all that I could have hoped for – I landed higher!
